The Real Reasons This Works

→

EU Citizenship in 5 Years

Malta offers one of the fastest paths to EU citizenship through naturalisation - 5 years of residency. An EU passport opens doors across 27 member states.

→

English is Official Language

Malta is one of only two EU countries where English is an official language. No language barrier for Indians.

→

Malta Retirement Programme

A dedicated programme for non-EU retirees offering flat 15% tax on foreign income remitted to Malta. The minimum annual tax under the programme is EUR 7,500 (that's the floor tax, not the income requirement). For Indian retirees with significant pension income, this is one of the better EU tax regimes available.

→

Mediterranean Climate

Malta enjoys over 300 days of sunshine per year, warm winters, and a beautiful Mediterranean environment.

→

Strategic Location

Malta sits between Europe and North Africa, with easy access to Italy (1 hour flight) and the entire EU.

How to Get Residency in Malta

The main pathways available to Indian retirees and investors.

Flat 15% tax on foreign income remitted to Malta. Minimum annual tax payable is EUR 7,500 regardless of income level (this is the minimum tax, not the minimum income). The MRP requires you to be a genuine retiree with pension income. Property ownership or rental in Malta required. No minimum stay requirement. Administered by the Malta Tax and Customs Administration.

Flat 15% tax on foreign income. Minimum income €35,000 if resident in Malta or €25,000 if outside Gozo. Property ownership or long lease required.

After 5 years of residency, apply for Maltese citizenship - which is EU citizenship. Stringent requirements but achievable.

Medical Care in Malta

Malta has both public and private healthcare systems. Private hospitals like St James Hospital are well-equipped and English-speaking throughout. Healthcare costs are moderate. Private health insurance is recommended for non-residents and costs approximately Rs 10,000–20,000/month for a couple.

Indians in Malta

Malta has a small but growing Indian community, primarily professionals and retirees. English is the common language, which makes integration much easier than most European destinations. Indian restaurants are present in Valletta and Sliema.

What Happens to Your Indian Taxes

The Malta Retirement Programme taxes foreign income remitted to Malta at a flat 15% - one of the lowest in the EU. India and Malta have a DTAA. Your Indian-sourced income not remitted to Malta is generally not taxed by Malta.

Note: Tax situations vary based on your income structure and residency pattern. Work with a qualified tax advisor who understands both Indian and Malta tax law before making decisions.
