What Most People Get Wrong

The questions we hear most often. And the honest answers, not the sanitised ones.

Yes. But "permanently" means different things in different countries. Portugal and Spain offer long-term residency that can lead to citizenship in 5 to 10 years. Thailand gives you renewable visas, not permanent residency. UAE gives you a retirement visa that's valid for 5 years at a stretch. So the answer is yes, but the mechanism changes depending on where you go. The mistake most people make is conflating "residency" with "citizenship." They're not the same thing, and not every country offers both to Indians.
This varies more than most guides will admit. In Thailand, a couple can live very comfortably on ₹1.2 to 1.5 lakhs a month. Portugal needs closer to ₹2 to 2.5 lakhs. Dubai will eat ₹4 lakhs and still leave you budgeting. The honest number for a dignified, not luxurious retirement in most of our recommended destinations sits between ₹1.5 and ₹3 lakhs a month. Use the calculator on this page. It accounts for your savings, investment returns, and what you actually want to spend, not what the brochures suggest.
Your assets stay yours. Moving abroad doesn't change ownership of property or investments you hold in India. But how they're taxed changes significantly once you become a non-resident. Your NRI status kicks in if you stay outside India for more than 182 days in a financial year, which changes which accounts you can hold and how your income is taxed under DTAA. Your pension still comes to you. Most government pensions and EPF can be received in your Indian bank account and transferred abroad. What you need to do upfront is convert your savings accounts to NRO accounts and get the paperwork right. That's the part people usually leave too late.
A Golden Visa is a residency-by-investment programme. You invest a certain amount in a country, and in return, you get the right to live there. Portugal's requires €500K in qualifying funds. Greece's starts at €400K to €800K depending on the zone (updated 2024). But here's the thing: not everyone needs one. If you have a stable passive income, Portugal's D7 visa costs nothing to get and is arguably better for most retirees. Golden Visas make sense if you want an investment route to citizenship, or if you want EU residency but don't plan to actually live there full time. If you're planning to actually move and live somewhere, there's often a simpler, cheaper path.
Not unless you choose to. India doesn't allow dual citizenship, so if you take Portuguese or Spanish citizenship eventually, you'd need to surrender your Indian passport. But that's a choice years down the road, and most people we speak to don't want to. Living abroad on a residency visa doesn't affect your Indian citizenship at all. You keep your passport, your OCI eligibility for family members, your right to return. Many retirees live in Portugal or Thailand for a decade without ever seeking local citizenship. It's entirely your call.
Better than you might expect, and worse than the brochures suggest in some cases. Portugal has universal healthcare for residents, which is genuinely good but slow in the public system. Private hospitals in Lisbon are excellent and significantly cheaper than equivalents in London. Thailand is where this really shines. Bangkok's private hospitals are consistently ranked among Asia's best. Many Indian doctors practice there, English is spoken throughout, and costs are a fraction of India's top private hospitals. UAE has good infrastructure but expensive. Malaysia sits somewhere in the middle — solid private care, Indian-speaking doctors in Kuala Lumpur, reasonable prices. The key is private health insurance, which you'll need regardless of where you land.
Thailand and Malaysia move the fastest. Thailand's LTR visa for retirees has a clear income requirement and a relatively simple process. Malaysia's MM2H has gotten stricter but is still manageable if you meet the financial thresholds. Portugal takes longer, typically 4 to 8 months for the D7, more for the Golden Visa. Spain is similar. The processing times are real, and the paperwork requirements are substantial. Start earlier than you think you need to. The people who run into trouble are the ones who gave themselves 3 months to sort out a process that officially takes 6.
For the right person, it's transformative. Better weather, lower costs, a slower pace, access to European travel, and the personal reset that comes from building a new life. But it demands real adjustment. Your social network doesn't come with you. Family visits involve flights. The bureaucracy of another country is genuinely hard. The people who thrive are usually the ones who go with a plan, stay flexible, and give themselves at least a year before deciding if it's working. The ones who struggle either went in underprepared or expected it to feel like India but cheaper. It won't. And that's mostly the point.
